Neighbourhood Planning Referendum for Swanley – 4 July 2024

A Referendum relating to the adoption of the Swanley Neighbourhood Development Plan will be held on Thursday 4 July 2024.

The Referendum will ask residents of Swanley to vote ‘yes’ or ‘no’ to the following question: Do you want Sevenoaks District Council to use the Neighbourhood Plan for Swanley to help it decide planning applications in the neighbourhood area?

Entitlement to vote

A person is entitled to vote in the Referendum if, on Tuesday 18 June 2024:

  • They are registered to vote in a local government election in the referendum area; and
  • Their qualifying address for the election is in the referendum area. The referendum area is shown in the Swanley area map provided above

Any person entitled to vote in the referendum will given a ballot paper at their usual polling station, or, for postal voters, a separate postal ballot paper which will be dispatched around 19 June 2023.

 

Campaigning

Individuals or bodies (including Councillors), but not public bodies, can campaign for a particular outcome for the referendum as ‘campaign organisers’.

Anyone who is intending to campaign at a Neighbourhood Planning Referendum is encouraged to contact elections@sevenoaks.gov.uk for more advice and information on the referendum process.

Whilst there are no specific legal requirements for campaign groups at Neighbourhood Planning Referendums, the Electoral Commission has produced extensive guidance on conduct when campaigning at national referendums, which can be used as a guide. If you are unsure of any matter, you should seek your own independent legal advice.

  • Registration deadline – Tuesday 18 June 2024 – midnight
  • Postal vote application deadline – apply for a postal vote, cancel or amend an existing postal vote – 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024
  • Proxy votes – to amend an existing proxy vote – 5pm on Wednesday 19 June 2024
  • Proxy vote – application deadline for new proxy votes – 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024
  • Voter Authority Certificate application deadline – 5pm on Wednesday 26 June 2024
  • Date of Referendum– Thursday 4 July 2024 - 7am to 10pm
