What is CIL and when does it apply?

The Community Infrastructure Levy (CIL) allows local authorities to secure funding for infrastructure to support development. This is done by requiring developers to pay a standard charge per square metre of qualifying new development. It will help to pay for things such as schools, health facilities and transport improvements - all things that are necessary to support new development. The Planning Portal website gives further information and guidance on CIL.

Adopted charging schedule

We began charging CIL on qualifying developments on 4 August 2014. CIL also applies to appeals granted after this time, permission granted following an enforcement action and any qualifying development undertaken under permitted development rights.
