Cllr John Edwards-Winser, the Chairman of Sevenoaks District Council, raised the Red Ensign above the Council offices in honour of the British Merchant Navy.
The flag raising took place on Friday 30 August at the Council’s offices in Sevenoaks in advance of Merchant Navy Day on 3 September.
The Chairman was joined by Lord Colgrain Deputy Lieutenant of Kent, Mayor of Sevenoaks Nicholas Busvine, Chairman of Edenbridge Town Council Cllr Alan Layland, the Westerham Sea Cadets and local veterans.
Cllr Edwards-Winser says: “It was an honour to commemorate the work of the Merchant Navy. Their work has often been unrecognised, especially during the Second World War so it was a privilege to lead the flag raising ceremony. They are essential to our prosperity and survival as an island nation.”
