Sevenoaks District Council is supporting the Queen’s Green Canopy scheme, and helping the environment at the same time, by planting three new oak trees.
The Queen’s Green Canopy is a tree planting scheme to mark Her Majesty’s Platinum Jubilee in 2022, celebrating 70 years of service.
In support of the initiative, the Council has planted oaks in Cherry Avenue in Swanley, Skeynes Road in Edenbridge and Hollybush in Sevenoaks.
Cllr Lesley Dyball, the Council’s Cabinet Member for People and Places, says: “The Queen’s Green Canopy gives us an opportunity to think about the importance of trees and how they enrich our lives and the planet.
“Trees provide social, cultural and environmental benefits that can go unnoticed. They also remove carbon from the atmosphere, helping to tackle global warming while providing shelter and food to thousands of species of wildlife. Our humble oak tree alone is thought to have 2,300 different species associated with it!”
The tree-planting season is from October through to April and planting a tree is easy. Once in the ground, they need little maintenance and can thrive for decades.
