Lennox Cato, the Kent Deputy Lieutenant, was amongst the guests who joined the Council Chairman, Cllr Avril Hunter, to celebrate Commonwealth Day (Monday 13 March 2023).
The day was an international celebration of the Commonwealth of Nations marked by a multi-faith service at Westminster Abbey in London.
Hosted outside Sevenoaks District Council’s offices, the Commonwealth flag was raised at 10am with prayers led by Reverend Mark Bridgen.
Sevenoaks District Council Chairman, Avril Hunter, says: “Commonwealth Day is about celebrating the unity and inclusivity of the Commonwealth and I was delighted to be part of a global event that is taking place across Africa, Asia, the Caribbean and Americas, the Pacific and Europe.
“History was made as this was the first Commonwealth Day since Her Majesty’s passing, and the first presided over by His Majesty King Charles III as King and Head of the Commonwealth.
“The focus of this year’s day was forging a sustainable and peaceful common future, something that is so important not just for all Sevenoaks District residents, but for the 2.6 billion people who live in the Commonwealth too.”
