Cllr Alan Layland, the Chairman of Sevenoaks District Council, helped to raise the Red Ensign above the Council offices in honour of the British Merchant Navy.
The flag raising took place on Friday 1 September 2023 in advance of Merchant Navy Day on Sunday 3 September.
The Chairman was joined by Westerham Sea Cadets, Kent Deputy Lieutenant Lennox Cato, local veterans, Leader of the Council Cllr Julia Thornton, Armed Forces Champion Cllr Larry Abraham and Council staff.
Cllr Layland says: “It was such a privilege to lead the flag raising ceremony for the Merchant Navy.
“It’s important to honour the brave men and women who have served our nation in the past and who continue to do so in today’s Merchant Navy.
“Their sacrifices are often forgotten or may not visible. But we should remember these hard-working seafarers kept the UK afloat during both World Wars and to this day, as an island nation, we continue to be reliant on their hard work and dedication."
