Sevenoaks Wednesday Market is set to move to the High Street from early December 2024.
The move, to the Market Place in the High Street, is timed to take advantage of the busy pre-Christmas period.
Currently the market takes place in Buckhurst 1 Car Park, next to Sevenoaks bus station.
In recent times, the traders have asked to move the market to the High Street where there is more footfall.
The move, for a trial period of six months, will also free up 76 car parking spaces on Wednesdays, benefiting visitors.
This is happening now because some nearby businesses could put tables and chairs in Market Square on Wednesday, restricting space for market stalls. The businesses agreed to change this when their Pavement Licences were renewed at the end of September 2024.
Cllr Irene Roy, Sevenoaks District Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener, says: “We’ve listened to the traders and decided to move the market in time for the important Christmas trading period.
“It’s a win-win situation. Traders should have more custom in this central location and visitors on market days should find it easier to park. Other retailers in the town should also feel the benefit with more shoppers on the High Street.”
The Sevenoaks Wednesday market runs from 8am to 2pm every week. It sells a variety of clothes, gifts, fresh food and flowers.
