Sevenoaks District Council has prosecuted the director of a fast-food outlet in Seal for failing to deal properly with his waste, including fly-tipping unused food.
Oguzhan Karsandi of 7 Oak Catering Ltd (known as Seal Kebab and Pizza), pleaded guilty to fly-tipping and failing in his duty of care, at Medway Magistrates’ Court on Monday 25 November 2024.
Acting on a complaint from the public on 18 April 2024, the Council found food waste left along Church Street Seal. The waste included partially eaten burgers and other food along with paper and plastic bags. The waste was traced back to Seal Kebab and Pizza, and the business was issued with a fixed penalty notice for the offence.
Around 20 May 2024, the Council’s Environmental Investigations team then discovered three bags of dumped waste on Seal Recreation Ground which included a whole kebab on a skewer and a large pile of receipts from Seal Kebab and Pizza.
The take-away establishment ignored several letters from the Council and did not turn up to be interviewed regarding the incidents.
At Court, Mr Karsandi was fined a total of £1,512, which covered the offences, costs to the Council, and compensation for clear-up costs.
Cllr Irene Roy, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener says:
“Our team tried on many occasions to work with Mr Karsandi to resolve this issue, but he continued to fail in his duty of care and was caught fly tipping. Not only was the waste cleared up at a cost to the taxpayer, but it was also tipped in a well-used public space used by local families. As Mr Karsandi refused to heed our warnings, we had no choice but to take further action to protect our communities.”
