A fly tipper who dumped waste, including asbestos, across the Sevenoaks District has been handed a custodial sentence following an investigation by Sevenoaks District Council.
Jamie Bamblett, 37, from Snodland in Kent, pleaded guilty to seven offences at Folkestone Magistrates’ Court on 27 November 2024.
Mr Bamblett used Facebook to advertise his ‘scrap metal removal’ business where he would take money from households for removing their waste, then fly-tip it in various locations across the Sevenoaks District.
The Council’s Environmental Enforcement team investigated the case. They traced waste left in Toy’s Hill, Emmetts Lane, Ide Hill, St Clere’s Estate Kemsing, York’s Hill Sevenoaks, Ovenden Lane Brasted, Dairy Lane Crockham Hill, and Rectory Lane Edenbridge back to Mr Bamblett.
The fly-tips included asbestos and a mix of household, commercial and construction materials.
Mr Bamblett was given a 120-day custodial sentence on each offence concurrently. He was also ordered to pay £4,665 in fines, costs and compensation on his release.
Cllr Irene Roy, the Council’s Cabinet Member for Cleaner and Greener says: “This prosecution is a great result for our Environmental Enforcement team. They were able to trace the fly-tipped waste back to Mr Bamblett through the people who hired him.
“Fly tipping is illegal, and we will not tolerate it in our District. Dumping asbestos is particularly concerning as it also poses a risk to health.
“Mr Bamblett convinced many people that he had a legitimate business. This case is a good example of why you should always check that the person removing your waste has a waste carriers’ licence.”
