Council supports National Apprenticeship Week

Published: Monday, 10th February 2025

Sevenoaks District Council is supporting National Apprenticeship Week between 10 and 16 February 2025.

Apprentices are often seen as qualifications for young people aged between 16 and 18, but, more recently, they are being promoted as a way to upskill existing staff by helping them gain qualifications.

Sevenoaks District Council currently has eight apprentices in varying disciplines and levels. These range from Town Planning, Audit, HR, Team Leaders and more.

Three Council staff who are doing completely different apprenticeships are Chartered Town Planner apprentice Danielle Durham, Internal Audit Professional apprentice, Nicholas Jones and Environmental Health Practitioner, Lily Allen.

All three took up apprenticeship opportunities to improve their knowledge and benefit their roles within the Council.

Danielle says: “The apprenticeship is both practical and theoretical and provides background knowledge to the role I’m in. It has already been helpful in my day-to-day work.”

Nicholas says: “It has deepened my knowledge of internal audit considerably and I have had the opportunity to meet a number of interesting people on the course from many different organisations.”

Lily says: “It will enable me to have a career for life with opportunity for a wide range of specialisms and will allow me to make a real change to the customers of Sevenoaks and beyond.”

Sevenoaks District Council Leader, Cllr Roddy Hogarth, adds: “Apprenticeships are an exciting option where you get hands-on training, the chance to put your skills into practice and progress along a career path.

“There are hundreds of apprenticeships to choose from, at all different levels and some include a qualification, like a degree.

“They are great for developing individuals with skills and knowledge and they can help businesses grow a talented workforce with skills for the future.”
