A former District Council leader, Roger Walshe, has sadly passed away.
Roger served continuously on the District Council from 7 May 1987 until May 2015.
Cllr Walshe was first elected to the Sevenoaks Wildernesse ward, which became Sevenoaks Eastern. Over his 28 years of service, he spent time as Leader of the Liberal Democrat group and shared his ward with Cllr Tony Clayton and then Cllr Elizabeth Purves.
Following re-election in 1995, Cllr Roger Walshe became the joint Leader of the Council. A post he held for four years.
Sevenoaks District Council Leader, Cllr Roddy Hogarth says: “Councillors and staff are very saddened by the news of Roger Walshe’s passing.
“He was a much-loved figure in a community where he made such a tremendous contribution.
“My most sincere condolences go to his wife, Pamela, his family and friends.”
Leader of the Sevenoaks District Liberal Democrats, Cllr Alan Leaman adds: "I know from my councillor colleagues of all parties that they admired and respected Roger and liked him hugely as well. They have told me that he always acted and spoke in what he believed was the best interests of the residents who he was proud to represent.
“This is very sad news. Roger's contribution to the town and life of Sevenoaks was enormous and he will be greatly missed."
There will be a service of thanksgiving for Roger on Friday 13 June at 3pm in St Nicholas’ Church and the flag at the Council Offices will be lowered to half-mast on the day of the funeral as a mark of respect.
